The Texas Driving Academy TEEN TRAINING
Teens (under 18) parents always have two options:
OPTION 1: Professional Drivers Ed
To meet the state 32-hour drivers ed requirement:
- Student takes the course at our facility for 16 days
- Students can apply for a learners permit after the first 6 hours
To meet the 14-hour behind-the-wheel training requirement:
- A professional driving instructor teaches the lessons
- Texas requires 7 hours driving and 7 hours observation
- Student also has an option of separate private lessons
- Trained instructor and dual controls for safety
- Lessons are covered by school’s full coverage insurance
To meet the 30-hour driving practice requirement:
- The student practices driving with the parent and records all hours (log sheet is provided by the school)
- Passenger must be at least 21 years old and has held a Texas license for at least 1 year
- 20 hours of practice during the day and 10 hours of practice at night are required
OPTION 2: Parent-Taught Drivers Ed
To meet the 32-hour drivers ed requirement:
- Student takes the course at our facility for 16 days
- Student can apply for a learners permit after the first 6 hours
To meet the 14-hour behind-the-wheel training requirement:
- Parent must obtain DPS approval to teach the lessons
- All lessons must be taught by the same parent
- DPS rules require 76+ total hours of the parent’s time
- Student learns to drive in the parent’s vehicle
- Lessons are covered by your personal insurance
To meet the 30-hour driving practice requirement:
- The student practices driving with the parent
- 10 hours of practice at night are required
